Many, many people have stuffed away emotions for years - a lifetime even.
All the feelings that weren’t ’safe’ or ‘appropriate’ to show, feel or share.
Sadness, embarrassment, boredom, uncertainty, (procrastination) and even more
predominantly anger and rage are actually at the base of many of our
behaviours.
The cleansing & replenishing program I coach my clients to begin with is
so liberating. Iit gives a structure and complete nutrition which provides
visible, physical results so people have more motivation to stick with it. Yet
it also causes us to begin healthy behaviour & HABIT change and this
particular process can be uncomfortable.
The old habits (we often call them personality traits) may have led to
‘keeping your mouth shut’ or ‘not voicing your opinions’. You might have
formerly used a food or activity that involved eating to stifle the emotions
mentioned above - and now you aren’t ‘covering them up’ the same way as
before. While your body gets exceptional nutrition, you are able to work
through the opportunities for personal growth that appear for some as
frustration and mood changes. (On the other hand most people report an overall
sense of well being and uplift so having one or two down days is a real treat
compared to ‘before’)
It’s not that in these random moments with our families at dinner on a
cleanse day we are angry at them or dislike them or hate that they are eating
something we aren’t or that we are wrong or bad, its that we are experiencing
the subtle (or not) discomfort that comes when we go from familiar to unfamiliar
new habits.
As we all begin to make the shifts that support LIFELONG health as opposed to
‘diet mentality’, our peer to peer coaching, support groups, accountability get
togethers, and phone calls all contribute to working through the hidden issues
that would previously sabotage short term programs. I celebrate with those who
have tough days because they are making progress in their journey and following
through will mean you never ‘go back’.
